Naomie Samuels, 26, from Santa Aratack Mission in Region Three, has aptly represented her indigenous heritage for the past year after winning the 2011 Amerindian Heritage Pageant crown, beating out  nine other contestants. She holds this crown until 2013. Last year, the Amerindian Heritage Pageant pertinently conveyed the fusion of diverse culture that is the Amerindian way of life. It was the platform interview segment that determined the evening’s outcome and separated Naomie from the other nine contestants. The young queen skillfully handled the platform interview questions that were asked. She articulately delivered to the packed National Cultural Centre theatre inclusive of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, and other dignitaries. Her platform was cervical cancer. She was asked the importance of choosing such an area and if there were significant education in her region as it relates to it. Fluently, Naomie responded that cervical cancer was important to her because of the prevalence of the disease among Amerindian women, and she seized the opportunity to advise females in the audience to get themselves tested stating, “Prevention is better than cure.” Additionally, she sought the opportunity to expound on the lack of education relating to cervical cancer among Amerindian women. Her eloquent delivery was applauded by all in attendance and Naomie walked away the victor. This year, the queen actively took part in all aspects of the Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations and spoke on the month’s theme: “Embracing Our Identity, Celebrating our Culture.”
